My Famous Five
The Famous Five
As a chaplain in ministry, the following guides have enhanced my ministry of caregiving, and I offer them as an invitation to anyone interested in providing care, as my way of contributing to the field of caregiving.
The Platinum Rule: Treat others the way they want to be treated. This is important because sometimes we may approach ministry through the lens of the Golden Rule, which states that we treat others the way we want to be treated.
Active listening: This involves listening to understand and not just listening to respond. It makes a difference in every relational context to listen to understand, although it has its specific challenges; the long-term benefit of assisting and accompanying the other person is the goal of active listening.
Everyone has a story: Each person's story is different, and the necessity of remembering that cannot be overstated. The uniqueness of each person's story helps us in offering care.
Show empathy: When listening to the story of any care-seeker, there is a need to show empathy, which in turn invites the care-seeker to recognize our concern for their situation.
Bring Hope: In a world where there are constant challenges and sometimes personal, relational, and professional challenges, the need to be a beacon of hope from the perspective of a Caregiver cannot be overstated.
These factors have guided and empowered me as I work through the challenging field of caregiving as a chaplain and a minister of grace to others in need of chaplain accompaniment.
